A LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT:
|
Downtown Brown Stokes
Hi, I'm Brown Stokes, President of the Kerrville,
Texas chapter of the Blue Knights (Texas-XXIII). I
am a retired Deputy Sheriff from the Kerr County,
Texas Sheriff's Office, after twenty-one years as a
Texas Peace Officer.
I have been riding motorcycles since 1955, my first
motorcycle was a 1946 Harley Davidson. Over the
years I've enjoyed riding several other brands of
bikes, but have returned to my first love, and
currently ride an '05 Harley Ultra Classic.
I had been interested in joining the Blue Knights for
a long time. Then, one day while riding through a
Texas town, I spotted Blue Knight colors on a biker.
I chased him for miles before overtaking him. After
exchanging names and job information, I requested
he have someone from his chapter contact me with
information about how to become a Blue Knight. I
waited and waited, but no contact.
Three months later I was perusing the Austin
chapter website, and found they were having a
meeting the very next weekend, decided to attend
and join up.
I rode to the meeting place, but arrived an hour and
a half too soon, and thought the meeting had been
cancelled. Next month, though, made contact with
the chapter at their regular monthly meeting,
submitted my application and became a member of
Texas XIII in April 2005.
Am impressed by the fact that not just the regular
members take part in the activities; spouses and
children are also very active. Wife, Sheila, is
involved, and we thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie.
We share not only a bond through our law
enforcement brotherhood, but our love of riding
motorcycles.
For Kerrville, it all began in September 2005, when
A.J. Sandoval and some members from Texas IV
and XII came to the Kerrville Police Department and
contacted Rob McCutcheon and Steve Sudyka for
the specific purpose of assisting in starting a new
chapter here. That same month, Sheila and I were
camping at Garner State Park with Texas XXI.
President Ken Reeves and I discussed that very
same subject. After arriving back home, we
contacted A.J., and started the process.
After a bout of furious recruiting, our chapter was
chartered two months later, in November 2005, at
the Acapulco Restaurant in Kerrville, with numerous
members from San Antonio and Helotes attending
to wish us well. Ken and Sandy Reeves made the
ride from Waxahachie to help us launch our new
chapter.
Now that we have been chartered for a little more
than a year-and-a-half, we are still an enthusiastic
group of active and retired law enforcement officers,
along with their spouses, looking forward to hosting
the Rio Grande Council conference in May 2008.
We are located in the picturesque Hill Country, and
boast the finest riding in Texas. Any qualified active
or retired law enforcement officer is welcome, and
encouraged to join our chapter. Contact me at
bhstokes@ktc.com , or see the "Qualifications"
section of the Blue Knights International website
www.blueknights.org . I will personally make the
trip to help with your application and get you signed
up.
We want you and your family to join us. You won't
regret it.
